| We know that hungry kids can’t focus on learning. This is why our school food distribution program is one of our cornerstone supports. Our partnership with the Food Depot made it possible for our team to distribute 78,678 meals’ worth of healthy groceries through school food distributions last school year. Food Security is a critical cornerstone of childhood health and wellbeing. This is why we are reaching out to you today to ask you to join us in defending the largest anti-hunger program in the nation. |

| The U.S. Senate is currently considering the passage of legislation that would devastate the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP is the largest anti-hunger program in the nation. If this bill passes, $1.7 trillion in food and health benefits will be taken from families, and 9.5 billion meals per year will disappear from family tables. Nonprofits simply cannot close the gap that such a devastating cut would leave behind. According to data shared by our partner The Food Depot, there are 451,200 New Mexicans who use SNAP to purchase groceries, fresh food, and local produce. This benefit is even more critical during the summer, when school meals and school food pantries are not accessible. A report by New Mexico Voices for Children states that 25% of New Mexicans currently receive SNAP benefits- the highest per capita rate in the Nation: 38% of those recipients are children. The Food Depot has created a letter to share stories and impact with our Senators and other lawmakers. We hope you will join with the CIS of New Mexico team to add your name. By insisting that our elected officials use tax dollars to help struggling families purchase food so they can use their income to cover other basic needs, we are effectively reducing poverty. Cuts to SNAP would not only devastate these families, they would devastate New Mexico’s entire economy. We simply cannot overstate the importance of defending this critical program. Communities In Schools of New Mexico stands with our partner The Food Depot in opposing any cuts to SNAP. Please join us by adding your name to The Food Depot’s letter to show your support. SNAP is not the only critical program under attack. Medicare and Medicaid, Americorps, federal student loan programs, public media, public education, and many other federal programs that provide critical services to our communities are under assault.
