Meet the Rising Graduates of 2024: Maya’s Story

Maya is a super achiever who has overcome many difficulties during her journey as a student in America. Determined to master English to empower her achievement and success in her future career, Maya provides support to her family in situations in which language is a barrier for them; including her brothers’ parent / teacher conferences and medical appointments. Supporting her family has meant that Maya has sometimes been absent from school, but she always gets caught up with any work she misses.

“Maya is committed to her success. She is driven and passionate about her future goal to become a lawyer to assist Middle Eastern families with adaptation to life in the United States.”

– Maria Gonzales, CIS Site Coordinator at Capital High School

“I want to pursue law and help people by advocating for them, making sure they are getting their rights and fighting injustice. And one day; going back to the middle east and helping people there.”

– Maya

In her effort to remain focused and succeed in school, Maya has been a participant in AVID, WAVE, CHS Student Council, Wrestling, and Gear Up. She is always searching for the balance between academic responsibilities and her spiritual beliefs, and is determined to stay true to herself. When Maya realized she was trying to do too much and found herself spiraling into a mental health crisis, she reached out to Site Coordinator Maria, who connected her to CIS coordinated groups at Capital High and provided the emotional support she needed to fuel her ambition and focus.  Maria has helped Maya to find the strength to persevere and finish her classes, and we are thrilled to celebrate her as she approaches graduation day and a what we are certain will be a very bright future!

“Maya is such a helpful, kind individual. She is always willing to volunteer her time, going above and beyond what is asked in student council. She cares for the other students, helping them with any needs they may have, and treats everyone, including her teachers, with respect. She has been a pleasure to have in student council.  – Ms. Flores, Maya’s student council sponsor at Capital High.
